5 Basic Safety Rules

It's always a good idea to follow these simple rules.

Rule 1

Treat all guns as if they are loaded.

If you handle or see a gun, always assume it is loaded, then if you are able to, check if it is unloaded. Otherwise, leave it alone.

Rule 2

Always keep a gun pointed in a safe direction.

In general, a 'safe direction' would be up to the sky, down to the ground, downrange (if you are on a range) or towards the object you intend to shoot, and ALWAYS keep a firearm pointed away from any other person or yourself, even if you know the gun is unloaded.

Rule 3

Keep your finger off the trigger and outside the guard until you are ready to shoot.

You could accidentally pull the trigger if you rest your finger on the trigger.

Rule 4

Be aware of your surroundings.

It's important to know what is around you and your target. For example, if you were to miss your target, could you potentially harm someone or something?

Rule 5

Wear the proper equipment and protection.

Proper gear for shooting is essential for making sure you don't get hurt and that you can operate the firearm correctly.

Additionally, similar to driving, do NOT handle guns while in an emotional state, as your judgement can be impaired. And, guns and alcohol/drugs do not mix, as they can impact physical coordination and judgement

If you have children, these 4 rules are useful if they ever see a gun :

1. Stop what you're doing.

2. Don't touch it.

3. Leave the area.

4. Tell an adult.

You should never leave children unsupervised in a home with a gun.
