Gun Storage

- The gun should be unloaded

- The gun should be stored in a locking storage device.

- The gun should be kept separately from ammunition

- Keep locks and keys safe and away from children or unauthorized individuals

Typically, guns are stored in locked boxes or gun safes. Many lock boxes grant quicker access to the gun, making it preferable for those who own guns for protection. Gun safes are heavier and deter theft, but are the most expensive option.

In California, all firearms will be sold with a safe storage device.

There are many types of locks that can be used on an individual gun (they do not prevent access to the gun, though), the two most common being trigger locks and cable locks.

A trigger lock will, as the name implies, blocks the trigger to prevent accidental firing, however they still allow for the gun to be loaded.

A cable lock blocks the action of the firearm, which does not allow for loading, and are the cheapest option.

Storing Rifles

Because rifles are bulkier and larger, they are stored slightly differently. There are rifle boxes, similar to a locked box for guns, that are larger and can store multiple rifles. You can also store multiple rifles using a rifle rack, provided that the rack has a way to lock the rifles into place and the rack should be stored out of sight in a safe place. Rules for guns apply to rifles, for example you still must store ammunition separately.
